SHAH ALAM: All akad nikah (marriage solemnisation) ceremonies in Selangor have been deferred after several officials of the state Islamic Religious Department (Jais) were placed under quarantine.
Jais director Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad said the officials had come in close contact with Covid-19 positive individuals during solemnisation ceremonies.
He said Jais had to defer all marriage applications until the restrictions under the movement control order end on March 31.
“This is the latest directive thus far, as we do not want any more of our marriage officials to be quarantined.
“Anyone affected by this directive is asked to contact their appointed assistant marriage registrar or marriage registrar for further arrangement of matters,” he said here today.
For solemnisation ceremonies after March 31, the parties involved still have to comply with the new regulations stipulated in Selangor until April 17.
The ceremonies must not be held at mosques and suraus, as decreed by the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, on March 17 as part of efforts to curb the spread of Covid-19 disease.
Shahzihan said the solemnisation ceremony must not exceed 20 minutes, including the marriage sermon. No shaking of hands between the groom and the wali (guardian of the bride) or with the marriage registrar is allowed.
