KOTA KINABALU: Police here have sounded the alarm over a rising number of scams involving the sale of face masks and hand sanitiser since early February.
City police chief Habibi Majinji said the suspects had managed to fleece desperate customers of more than RM147,000 so far.
“We’ve received 24 reports from people who were conned by the scams.
“They told police they saw advertisements for the items on either Facebook or Instagram.
“After the victims transferred payments into the bank account given, the individuals they contacted earlier over the items could not be reached and the masks and sanitiser never came,” he said here today.
To date, eight people have been detained and charged over the scams.
Adding that many were still falling prey to such scams, he urged members of the public to check the legitimacy of the accounts given at http://ccid.rmp.gov.my/semakmule/.
