KOTA KINABALU: Police compounded 57 people who defied the conditional movement control order (CMCO) by gathering without adhering to social distancing in Penampang, near here, last night.

Penampang police chief Mohd Haris Ibrahim said they were caught at three outlets at Jalan Bundusan during an operation at 9.15pm.

The 57, aged between 20 and 50, comprised 54 patrons, including 14 women, and three caretakers at the outlets, he said.

“All of them were not following the social distancing rule of being 1m apart from each other. They were brought to the district police station and issued the compounds,” he said.

Haris also reminded the public to refrain from visiting relatives and friends during the Kaamatan or Harvest Festival, which culminates this weekend.

“We understand that visiting is a tradition for any celebration or festival but due to the virus, we have to forego that for now in the interest of public health,” he said.
