KUALA LUMPUR: While 22 accidents involving drunk drivers were reported during the first five months of this year, 822 people were arrested during the same period on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department director Azisman Alias said those who were arrested between January and May were aged between 15 and 41.

He said they were investigated under Section 45A of the Road Transport Act 1987.

“Police will increase operations against drunk drivers nationwide.

“I urge other law enforcement agencies to take strong action and control the sale of alcohol,” he said in a statement today.

Azisman said of the 22 reported accidents, 12 were still under investigation while another 10 drivers had been charged in court.
