PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has announced that Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin, the outgoing president/CEO of Petronas, is the new chairman of Malaysia Airlines Berhad (MAB) while Tengku Muhammad Taufik Tengku Aziz has been appointed to succeed him at the national oil company.

In a statement, Muhyiddin said their appointments will come into effect on July 1.

“In this challenging economic situation, there are several government companies that need to be further strengthened in order to face a new normal globally.

“The government has continued to review the leadership of government-owned companies to ensure coordination in policies and to accomplish the nation’s socio-economic objectives,” he said.

Wan Zulkiflee will be vacating his current post as president/CEO of Petronas after five years at the helm of Malaysia’s sole company listed on Fortune 500, in taking up the position at MAB.

Muhyiddin thanked him for his service of 37 years in the petroleum company, adding that he had managed Petronas well and maintained its strong financial position.

“I believe that, under his leadership, MAB can be restructured and will continue to grow as a national flight carrier that is resilient and sustainable, while being well-governed,” he said.

Muhyiddin also said he trusted in the experience of Tengku Taufik, currently the Petronas chief financial officer, to lead the company at a time when oil prices and the global economy have been in decline.
