PPBM gives way to Umno in Chini by-election

PPBM says it will support the Barisan Nasional candidate who will represent PN in the Chini by-election.

PETALING JAYA: PPBM will not be contesting in the Chini by-election, the party’s secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin announced today.

Hamzah said in a statement that the decision was made to support the Barisan Nasional candidate who would represent Perikatan Nasional (PN).

“The entire PPBM machinery will be mobilised to ensure victory for Perikatan Nasional’s representative,” he said.

Previously, PAS, which is part of PN, had also said it would not contest the Chini seat in the by-election on July 4.

PKR is also not fielding a candidate in view of Covid-19.

The seat fell vacant following the death on May 6 of Abu Bakar Harun who had retained it for Umno with a 4,622-vote majority against PAS and PKR in the 2018 general election.

The Chini state constituency comes under the Pekan parliamentary constituency, whose MP is former prime minister Najib Razak.
