Umno man questions party’s decision to back Muhyiddin as PM for GE15
Umno Supreme Council member Shahrir Samad says other electoral matters should be decided first.
PETALING JAYA: Umno Supreme Council member Shahrir Samad today appeared to question his party’s decision to back Muhyiddin Yassin as prime minister for the next general election before other electoral matters are decided.
“Is there a need to resolve the question of who becomes PM first? Why is everything upside down?
“Shouldn’t we first resolve how BN, Muafakat Nasional or Perikatan Nasional will go into the 15th general election?
“On our own, or as a pact under our respective banners or just one party symbol,” the former Johor Bahru MP said in a Facebook post.
His remarks come after another Umno Supreme Council member, Annuar Musa, said Umno had agreed to back Muhyiddin as PM for GE15 after discussing the matter with PAS during a recent Muafakat Nasional meeting.
Annuar, the Ketereh MP, also confirmed a statement by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang that the Islamist party would back Muhyiddin to continue leading the country if Perikatan Nasional is returned to power.
“It is as if we are trying to respond to Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s offer of Shafie Apdal (Warisan president) as PM for Pakatan Harapan (rejecting PKR).”
Shahrir also questioned what conditions Muhyiddin would set after he is nominated as the PM candidate for GE15.
Yesterday, Barisan Nasional, PAS and East Malaysian political parties renewed their support for the PN coalition amid talk of snap elections.
