PEKAN: The unexpected presence of two newlywed couples in wedding attire turned heads at a polling station for the Chini state by-election today.

Abdul Rahim Idris, 28, and Ainul Aqilah Abdul Halim, 23, were in their maroon wedding clothes while Muhamad Aizat Zulkifli, 27, and Siti Hajar Idris, 27, wore dark blue. They arrived at the Dewan Semai Bakti, Felda Chini 3 polling station at 2.45pm.

Abdul Rahim and Siti Hajar are siblings who decided to cast their votes after the conclusion of their wedding reception at their family home in Felda Chini 3.

Abdul Rahim, a food service worker on an oil rig, said his wife and he had their marriage solemnisation ceremony on January 25 in Balok, Kuantan.

“We chose today for the reception because my sister, Siti Hajar, also planned to hold her wedding reception today, so it would be more cost-effective for our family. I never expected it to coincide with the by-election,” he said when met at the polling station.

Muhamad Aizat, a civil servant, accompanied his wife to the polling station as he is not a voter in the constituency. He said they had chosen the date for the wedding reception a year ago after they were engaged.

The Chini by-election was won by Barisan Nasional’s Mohd Sharim Md Zain, 41, by a 12,650-vote majority against independent candidates Tengku Zainul Hisham Tengku Hussin, 64, a businessman, and blogger Mohd Shukri Mohd Ramli, 49.
