PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) today defended its arrest of Mohamad Sabu’s political secretary following criticism by the former minister’s party Amanah which accused it of being “excessive”.
MACC deputy chief commissioner (operations) Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya said the arrest of Mohd Azhar Che Mat Dali, 49, was in accordance with the law as well as SOPs.
“The investigation is being carried out professionally,” he told FMT.
“MACC advises all parties against speculation. Give us the time and space to carry out the investigation.”
Amanah secretary-general Dr Hatta Ramli said yesterday that officers from the anti-graft agency had been “excessive” in raiding the party’s headquarters in Kuala Lumpur as part of their probe.
He claimed the MACC officers had failed to produce a warrant when they arrived at Wisma Amanah Negara, and that they told the security officers at the building that the warrant would be handed over to Azhar, who was taken in for remand.
Azhar, who was detained over an investigation related to a defence project worth RM56 million, has been remanded until July 13.
FMT earlier reported that MACC officers had confiscated cash from Azhar worth RM71,729 in various currencies, along with documents related to the project.
Khusairi said those dissatisfied with MACC’s actions could lodge a police report or take any action they deemed fit.
“MACC will continue with this investigation professionally and fairly according to the law until it is complete,” he said.
