KUALA LUMPUR: Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker Nga Kor Ming has announced his resignation in solidarity with Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof who was earlier removed as Dewan Rakyat speaker.

He said this was also in line with his principle to only serve the government elected by the people.

“Therefore, I resign with immediate effect as deputy speaker,” he said in a press conference at Parliament’s media room today.

Ariff, who was with him at the press conference, said there had never been a speaker expelled before his expiry of term in Parliament.

He also said he had high hopes for a candidate to replace him who would continue with parliamentary reforms.

He said he had no problem with the speaker’s position being vacated as long as it was done in line with the Federal Constitution.

“This is our constitutional system,” he said. “A speaker must be independent and neutral, and cannot be restricted.”

He added that he had said many times that the position of speaker was not a special officer’s position.

“If the speaker is elected by the Dewan, the position should also be vacated through a vote in the house.”
