PKR Youth backs PH decision to skip Slim by-election

Pakatan Harapan has decided to make way for Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s faction to contest in the Slim by-election on Aug 29.

PETALING JAYA: PKR Youth has agreed with Pakatan Harapan’s decision not to contest in the Slim by-election at the end of the month.

Its secretary, Ahmad Syukri Che Ab Razab, said the people’s safety must be prioritised because of the Covid-19 pandemic, and activities involving large gatherings must be avoided to minimise risks.

He also urged the authorities to introduce tighter SOPs during the by-election campaign and on polling day.

Yesterday, PH announced that it will make way for former PPBM chairman and prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s faction to contest in the by-election on Aug 29.

PH secretary Saifuddin Nasution Ismail was reported as saying the decision was made during a presidential council meeting.

The by-election was called following the death of its incumbent, Khushairi Abdul Talib, 59, on July 15.

The Election Commission has set Aug 15 as nomination day, Aug 25 for early voting and Aug 29 for polling.

During the 14th general election, Khusairi, representing BN, defended the state seat with a 2,183-vote majority, defeating the PPBM candidate contesting under the PKR banner, Mohd Amran Ibrahim, and PAS’ Muhammad Zulfadli Zainal.
