KUALA LUMPUR: Baling MP Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim today asked the government what initiatives have been taken to fill 440,000 job vacancies left by foreign workers.
He said there were 1.9 million foreign workers in January this year which dropped to 1.54 million by May.
Azeez also asked if the ministry will attract locals to work in construction and manufacturing sectors by providing insurance schemes and aid for their school-going children.
In response, Human Resources Minister M Saravanan said the ministry is going all out to encourage locals to take up jobs in various sectors.
“The government has proven that it can reduce dependency on foreign workers,” he said at Dewan Rakyat today, adding that counter jobs at petrol stations and restaurants were reserved for locals.
Saravanan said they would be looking into providing Social Security Organisation (Socso) assistance for the B40 group.
He also said that the well-being of foreign workers in the country will be looked into.
