KUALA LUMPUR: An independent MP’s reasons for thanking Perikatan Nasional created a stir at the Dewan Rakyat today, with an opposition member raising the question of corruption.
Jugah Muyang (Independent-Lubok Antu) had thanked deputy rural development minister Abdul Rahman Mohamad for increasing development funds in his constituency.
“Thank you deputy minister for approving several projects in Lubok Antu. I, representing the rakyat, want to thank the minister. That is why I shifted my support to PN to get more allocation for my area which is left behind in terms of development,” he said.
On hearing this, RSN Rayer (PH-Jelutong) asked for an explanation from the Speaker, Azhar Harun, as he felt that it was not right for Jugah to use such words.
“The backbencher is openly saying (his support is) because of projects, (the reasons) he shifted his support. This is the Dewan Rakyat. And they are openly talking about… abuse of power and corruption. What is all this?” Rayer said.
Rayer further asked if such language was allowed in the Dewan Rakyat. “The rakyat are watching,” he added.
Azhar replied that Jugah was merely expressing his appreciation for the additional funds being approved for development in his area.
Both sides then tried to justify their reasons for their statements, prompting the speaker to mute the microphones, and silence the floor.
Azhar said: “He (Jugah) did not say he is supporting PN after an additional allocation was given. He is not saying that.”
Azhar said Rayer might have understood differently.
Jugah was a member of PKR until June 6, when he pledged his support for PN and submitted a statutory declaration in support of Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.
He had contested as an independent candidate in the 2018 general election before joining PKR.
