KUALA LUMPUR: Former youth and sports minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, voicing concern over a low cost carrier pilot who apparently committed suicide after losing his job, said jobless youths need assistance.

“There could be a repeat of this if we focus on those with jobs but not on those without jobs,” he said at the Dewan Rakyat today.

He urged Putrajaya to create a special allocation for them by working with the youth and sports, finance and human resources ministries.

Youth and Sports Minister Reezal Merican said the ministry had apprenticeship schemes with various government agencies and programmes such as entrepreneurship and agro-based farming. The government was also looking at expanding the gig economy, he added.

Serdang police chief ACP Ismadi Borhan said initial investigations showed that A Sanjiv Daevin, 35, had fallen from the 12th floor of his condominium.

He said: “We have ruled out foul play. According to statements recorded from witnesses and people close to him, the victim had lost his job two months ago and had been in a distressed state.”
