BUKIT MERTAJAM: Police have identified the suspect behind the assault of a food delivery man in Alma here, after a video of the incident went viral on Facebook.

Seberang Perai Tengah district police chief Shafee Abd Samad said the 34-year-old victim lodged a police report on the incident, which took place at about 11am yesterday.

“The delivery man received an order through his company’s app and when he reached the housing area, he contacted the suspect to confirm the address due to some confusion.

“When he delivered the food, he was verbally abused and handed RM50 by the suspect. While the victim was counting the change, the suspect grabbed the money and gave the pizza back to him, saying he wanted to cancel his order,” Shafee said in a statement.

When the delivery man said he would have to report the cancellation to the company, the suspect took the food back and threw the money on the floor, where the victim then proceeded to place the change.

He said the suspect refused to accept the change and hit the delivery man with a helmet. He also threw the items in his motorcycle basket to the ground.

Shafee said the house owner intervened and investigations revealed that the suspect had rented the homestay premises for the past five days.

He said the suspect was being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for grievous hurt.
