MPs from EMCO areas told to undergo Covid-19 tests

KUALA LUMPUR: Dewan Rakyat speaker Azhar Harun today told MPs returning from constituencies under enhanced movement control order (EMCO) and targeted MCO to be tested for Covid-19.

He said MPs with positive cases in their constituencies should be tested for the virus as well.

“All MPs from these areas have been told by the health ministry to undergo tests,” he said, adding that this followed the identification of the Sivagangga cluster linked to a super-spreader strain of the virus.

He also urged all 222 MPs to follow SOPs by wearing face masks in the Dewan Rakyat except while debating or raising a point.

On Aug 8, health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said 43 cases linked to the Sivagangga cluster had been detected so far, in Kedah, Perlis and Penang.

Azhar also said transparent barriers had been put up to separate seats and ensure physical distancing among MPs in the Dewan Rakyat.

He said MPs who had been sitting in areas reserved for visitors or Parliament officers could now return to their original seats.
