PETALING JAYA: Barisan Nasional this evening named Mohamad Zaidi Aziz as its candidate for the Slim by-election to be held Aug 29.
Zaidi’s candidacy was announced by Perak Umno chief Saarani Mohamad in Trolak, Perak.
Zaidi, a businessman, was last month named as the acting Tanjung Malim Umno chief.
The 43-year-old father of four is the secretary-general for the Committee for Asean Youth Cooperation.
The by-election was called following the death of assemblyman Mohd Khusairi Abdul Talib, 59, of a heart attack on July 15.
Khusairi had been re-elected to the seat in 2018 after he defeated PPBM candidate Mohd Amran Ibrahim and PAS candidate Muhammad Zulfadli Zainal by a majority of 2,183 votes.
Nominations will be held on Saturday.
Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s new party Pejuang will name its candidate tonight.
