Nomination centre for Slim by-election under tight control

Police have blocked all access to the nomination centre in Tanjung Malim.

TANJUNG MALIM: The police have placed the Tanjung Malim District Council building under tight control for the Slim by-election nominations today.

All access from the main road to the council building, which is the nomination centre, have been closed and police are closely monitoring the situation by checking the credentials of anyone seeking to enter the area.

Only those with Election Commission (EC) passes are allowed to pass through, and no gatherings are allowed in the area.

The nomination process began at 9am and will close at 10am.

The by-election, which will take place on Aug 29, was called following the death of assemblyman Mohd Khusairi Abdul Talib, 59, of a heart attack on July 15.

In the last general election, Khusairi, who represented BN, retained the seat with a majority of 2,183 votes, defeating PPBM’s Mohd Amran Ibrahim and PAS’ Muhammad Zulfadli Zainal.

Barisan Nasional has named Tanjung Malim acting Umno chief Mohd Zaidi Aziz as the coalition’s candidate.

Meanwhile, Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s new party, Parti Pejuang Tanahair (Pejuang) named Perak-born syarie lawyer Amir Khusyairi Mohamad Tanusi as its candidate.

The full list of candidates is expected to be announced at 11am.
