Quit Cabinet, Ku Li tells Umno leaders

Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah says it is appropriate for Umno leaders in Cabinet to resign in view of the recent changes in PPBM.

PETALING JAYA: Veteran Umno leader Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah has called on his party’s leaders in the Cabinet to withdraw from the government.

In a statement, Tengku Razaleigh, more commonly known as Ku Li, said this was because PPBM had decided to accept non-Malays and this disqualified it from being a member of the Malay-Muslim pact Muafakat Nasional.

“Umno has never joined Perikatan Nasional and we only gave our support to form the government in the interest of the country’s political stability.

“With the changes in PPBM it is appropriate for Umno leaders in the Cabinet to withdraw from the government.

“This should be done as soon as possible so we do not waste time which should be used to focus on bigger issues.”

This, he said, included youth unemployment during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Previously, PPBM president Muhyiddin Yassin said the party may amend its constitution to set up a non-Malay chapter in which they can hold leadership positions.

The party currently allows non-Malays to join the party as associate members but they cannot hold leadership positions.
