Don’t blame PH for cutting fishermen’s allowance, ex-minister tells PM

Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin says the allowance for fishermen will be increased from RM250 to RM300 a month.

PETALING JAYA: Former agriculture and agro-based industry minister Salahuddin Ayub has told Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin not to blame Pakatan Harapan (PH) for cutting the allowance of fishermen from RM300 to RM250 a month.

The Amanah deputy president said this was because Muhyiddin was part of the Cabinet then and should know that any decision made by the government was a collective decision of the Cabinet.

“When I was a minister, I was always worried (about the fishermen) and had asked the government to raise their allowance back to RM300.

“I am happy that what I fought for before this has become a reality today. Only, he (Muhyiddin) cannot blame the previous administration as he, too, was in the Cabinet then,” Salahuddin told FMT.

Yesterday, Muhyiddin announced the government would increase the allowance for the fishermen from RM250 to RM300 a month.

Speaking at an event in Beaufort, Sabah, he said that under the PH administration, which included Warisan, the allowance was slashed.

Salahuddin said while people perceived any promise made during an election campaign as an attempt to fish for votes, what was important was that some 40,000 fishermen nationwide would benefit from the increased allowance.
