KOTA KINABALU: Warisan president Shafie Apdal has rubbished allegations that he is leading a Semporna-centric government.
He was responding to a video posted on Facebook by former prime minister Najib Razak showing Shafie speaking of how he had appointed people from Semporna, where he is the MP, to high positions in the state government.
“We have seven permanent secretaries who are Dusun. (And) who is the police commissioner now?” Shafie said, referring to Hazani Ghazali, who is originally from the peninsula, and had replaced Semporna native, Omar Mammah, who had retired.
“Who is the state secretary (Safar Untong)? Look at the facts and don’t fabricate stories, by saying that Semporna people are monopolising positions.”
In his posting, Najib questioned the “unity” theme Warisan Plus was professing when Shafie had himself admitted to appointing his own people to important positions in Sabah.
Meanwhile, Shafie said he was optimistic Warisan Plus will perform well in the state elections on Saturday.
“There have been some predictions over the number of seats but I don’t want to be complacent.
“We need to work hard but what I heard from the people on the ground is that it’s winnable,” he told reporters after a Sabah Unity Movement programme with the youth today, which was also attended by Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.
Shafie, who is defending his Senallang seat against four others, said he was also excited to see everyone in Warisan Plus, even leaders and former assemblymen who were not picked to contest, doing their best to ensure a victory for the coalition.
