Terima kasih and goodbye, says US envoy to Malaysia
Kamala Shirin Lakhdhir will end her four-year tenure soon, after Donald Trump’s presidential term comes to a close.
PETALING JAYA: Two days after new US president Joseph Biden was sworn in, Kamala Shirin Lakhdhir, the country’s ambassador here, has bid farewell to Malaysia with her four-year tenure ending soon.
In a Facebook video, Kamala listed her country’s various efforts in supporting Malaysia, namely its contributions to Malaysia’s economy, SMEs and research on infectious diseases during the global health crisis.
“In 2020, US businesses donated nearly RM7 million to frontliners and local communities because of the pandemic. I know in 2021, they will continue their great efforts,” she said.
Recalling that one of her first trips was a visit to the Sabah Wildlife Department, Kamala assured that the US would continue to assist the country in overcoming wildlife trafficking and protecting its ecosystems.
Kamala said the US was also committed to ensuring a “free and open Indo-Pacific” through its cooperation with Malaysia’s regional and maritime security.
She expressed her appreciation for the country’s diverse population, noting that Malaysians studying in US military academies were “some of the most special people” she had met.
