PETALING JAYA: Although the Shah Alam High Court rejected the application by police to remand the alleged founder of sugar daddy dating platform Sugarbook, he is still being detained over two cases.
The Selangor Criminal Investigation Department (CID) said in a statement that the man had been detained to facilitate investigations under Sections 376 and 372 of the Penal code. Section 376 of the Penal Code refers to the offence of rape while 372 refers to prostitution.
Police said the investigations under these two sections were being undertaken following a complaint from a student at an institute of higher learning.
Yesterday, police arrested a man said to be the founder of the website and mobile application Sugarbook, the biggest “sugar daddy-sugar baby” dating service in Asia.
“During initial investigations, the suspect admitted to being the founder of the Sugarbook application,” Selangor CID said, adding that the man would also be investigated under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
Meanwhile, Foong Cheng Leong, the lawyer representing the 34-year-old man, said Shah Alam High Court deputy registrar Noorasyikin Sahat dismissed the application for remand after his client pledged to give his full cooperation to facilitate police investigation into the case.
Police initiated an investigation into the dating website after it named 10 public and private universities as having the most students who chose to become “sugar babies” and sought “sugar daddies” to finance their lifestyles.
