PETALING JAYA: Brickfields Asia College Education Group’s (BAC) food bank, FreeMakan.com, has managed to raise some RM1.35 million in its endeavour to feed Malaysian families who are in need.
But BAC chairman Raja Singham said it needs to raise even more funds, as more requests for aid were coming in with families spiralling into despair due to lockdowns and loss of income.
While the food bank had aimed to raise RM1.5 million and provide for 30,000 families, Raja said, more than 20,000 households had received food baskets through FreeMakan, equal to over two million meals for 85,000 people across the nation.
These food baskets were delivered to families in the Klang Valley, Kedah, Perak, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Johor and Sabah.
These included 202 families in Pulau Gaya, Sabah, while the food bank has also reached out to Orang Asli communities in Johor and Selangor.
“These are the ones that have not received any aid yet. The requests for aid are also coming from refugees from all communities, migrants and undocumented workers and the stateless.

“Early this week, we sent 200 baskets to aid the flood victims at Gurun and Yan in Kedah and responded to an FMT article by delivering 200 food baskets to people at Panorama Lapangan Perdana in Ipoh,” he said.
Among the foundations and organisations that have contributed to FreeMakan are Creador Foundation, SPARK Foundation of Heineken, Perlis Plantations Bhd, CSR Sugar, Nestle Malaysia, Affin Hwang Capital, Adenland Group, MyTukar, MMA Wilayah, Enya, Aroma Flour, F&N, Comvita and Brickfields Asia College.
In thanking them for supporting these families in need, Raja called on more organisations to channel aid as more requests were still coming in.
“We will keep doing this for at least another three months as Covid-19 cases are still extremely high daily,” he said.
