
KUALA LUMPUR: A Petaling Jaya city councillor and an individual claimed trial in the magistrates’ court here today for disorderly conduct at a police station.
Selangor Wanita DAP secretary Nalina Nair and Sujatra Jayaraj were accused under Section 90 of the Police Act of committing the offence at the Dang Wangi police station here on Aug 19.
Nalina’s not guilty plea was recorded before magistrate Tawfiq Affandy Chin, and Sujatra’s plea was recorded before magistrate Wong Chai Sia.
They were among those arrested by police last week after they attended a memorial for Covid-19 victims at Dataran Merdeka.
If convicted, Nalina and Sujatra face a maximum fine of RM500 or six months jail.
Tawfiq allowed Nalina to post bail of RM5,000 in one surety, and Wong fixed bail of RM2,000 in one surety for Sujatra. They set Oct 1 for mention.
The duo were represented by lawyers Farida Mohammad and V Yoges.
It was reported that 31 individuals were arrested for attending the candlelight vigil. Among them were #Lawan organiser Mohammad Asraf Sharaf, Undi18 co-founder Qyira Yusri and the founder of youth-based group Misi Solidariti, Sarah Irdina Mohamad Ariff.
They were compounded RM2,000 each for breaching the SOPs.
