PETALING JAYA:
Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has warned that voter fatigue and disenchantment with the electoral process could lead to corrupt parties running the country.

The Langkawi MP said that it was apparent that many Malaysians had become disillusioned after seeing the former Pakatan Harapan (PH) government deposed through backroom dealings and party hopping.

“Some of those who are frustrated and tired of politics that deny the rights of the people, have now come to believe that general elections are useless. They may decide not to vote,” he said in a post on his blog.

“Unfortunately, the party they oppose may be a corrupt one which is involved in stealing government funds and abuse of power, and it could win because its followers will vote for them after being bribed. And then there will be a corrupt government of thieves and power abusers.”

The Pejuang chairman then suggested the need for an anti-hopping law saying without it, a corrupt government could still come to power despite voters having rejected it.

“MPs could change allegiances and bring down the government just as PH was brought down.

“That is why we need to have an anti-hopping law. Those who jump (from their party) will lose their position as an elected representative.

“By-elections can be held. Then it is up to the people to choose the same MP or someone else.”

He said it was up to the people to ensure parties that oppose corruption are able to secure large margins of victory come election time, so that attempts to form “backdoor” governments will be futile.
