Several areas in Shah Alam and Klang have been inundated after persistent heavy rain since Friday morning, which has forced many road closures in the area and caused thousands of residents to abandon their homes and head for higher ground.
Addressing criticism on social media that he was not attending to his constituents, the Amanah communications director said he had his hands full dealing with the disaster.
“We don’t post everything we do on Twitter, but I have been in Shah Alam since the morning,” he told FMT.
“We are helping to mobilise resources and transfer people to the flood relief centres. It’s still raining and the water level is still rising … We can only help as best as we can.”
While he said he was uncertain as to what the federal and state governments were doing to assist victims of the floods, he noted that the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) had been “running around” helping families.
He added that he had a tough time finding accommodation for the family members of the eight children and their mother, who died in a four-vehicle crash which involved a trailer lorry. The family is from Klang.
The accident at the USJ rest stop along the Elite Highway resulted in the death of 10 people.
“We tried to settle a place for them to stay, but all hotels are full,” he said. “I may have to put them up at one of my two offices,” he said.
