PETALING JAYA:
The military arrived in Klang Utama this morning to assist flood victims, after a weekend of heavy rainfall across the country saw thousands evacuated to safety.

In a tweet, Klang MP Charles Santiago confirmed the army would be working with his staff to help affected residents.

Yesterday evening, senior defence minister Hishammuddin Hussein tweeted that he had briefed the Armed Forces chief of staff at the ministry, Mohd Zakaria Yadi, on the situation in Klang.

In response, Santiago tweeted: “Spoke to Datuk Mohd Zakaria last night. This morning the army is in Klang Utama to begin operations and work with my staff.

“We need to extend support to Sri Muda once the work here is over,” he said, extending his gratitude to Hishammuddin for the quick response.

Over the weekend, the Klang Valley, Pahang, Kelantan and Terengganu were battered by heavy rain that began on Friday, which displaced more than 30,000 people.

Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced yesterday that RM100 million would be allocated to repair the damage caused by the floods, which included RM1,000 for each affected household.

Army deployed elsewhere

On his Facebook page, Hishammuddin shared images of the army rescuing people from the floods elsewhere in the country.

While he did not specify the exact location, armed forces personnel could be seen ferrying the elderly and children in a boat through the murky floodwater.
