PETALING JAYA: Schools will reopen one week later in January due to the floods affecting the country.
Education minister Radzi Jidin said this meant that schools will resume on Jan 9 for schools in Group A and Jan 10 for schools in Group B.
“Taking into account the floods which have affected students, parents and teachers, either directly or indirectly, the education ministry has decided that the third term will be postponed for a week,” Radzi said in a video on his Facebook page.
“We understand this is a very difficult time for everyone who is affected.
“Those affected will need some time to prepare before school resumes for the third term.”
Group A comprises schools in Johor, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu while Group B comprises schools in other states and the federal territories.
Group A schools were originally set to resume on Jan 2 while students in Group B were to return to school on Jan 3.
Radzi noted that not only had schools been badly affected by the floods, a number of them had also been converted into temporary relief centres for flood victims.
Radzi did not make any mention of the closing date for the 2021/2022 school term, which is slated to end on March 11 for Group A and March 12 for Group B.
The 2022/2023 school term is scheduled to start on March 21.
