The Tangkap Azam Baki Action Committee, a loose coalition of 25 groups, will gather outside Sogo at 11am to demand that he is arrested immediately, that legal action be taken against him, and that the MACC be placed under parliament’s purview.
“If you are not with us on the day at the time, fly the black flag and use the hashtags #TangkapAzamBaki and #RombakSPRM on all your social media posts,” the committee said in a statement today.
It invited all Malaysians to join them in the protest.
Azam’s share dealings have come under scrutiny in the last month, and he has been accused of purchasing millions of stocks and warrants in public-listed companies.
While he has since clarified that the shares were bought by his brother, Nasir, using his trading account, his explanation has not silenced his critics.
Azam has filed a civil suit against a whistleblower who reported his alleged shareholdings, and has since pushed to postpone the parliamentary select committee meeting scheduled on Wednesday to discuss the matter.
“Such pressure tends to cover up the real story from coming out and raises more questions,” the committee said.
“Various suggestions have been put forward to address this issue. Among them are restructuring the MACC, placing it under parliament, changing the composition of MACC’s members, and establishing an Independent Anti-Corruption Commission.
“Even so, all this is difficult to bring to fruition unless the legal process, that should start with the arrest of Azam Baki, begins immediately.”
Posters emblazoned with “Tangkap Azam Baki” began to circulate last week, but details on who was behind them or what was planned were scarce.
The civil society groups on the committee include Bersih, Suara Rakyat Malaysia, the National Patriots Association, the Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement (Abim) and Jaringan Kampung Orang Asli Semenanjung Malaysia.
Muda as well as the youth wings of PKR, DAP, Amanah, Pejuang and Parti Sosialis Malaysia are also on the committee.
