PETALING JAYA: National shuttler Lee Zii Jia has resigned from the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM).
BAM president Norza Zakaria has confirmed receiving Lee’s resignation letter, which was dated Jan 11.
“He couldn’t take the pressure and wants to achieve his dreams at his own pace,” Norza told FMT.
“We tried to persuade him and tried to negotiate but his team and family were adamant.”
He added that BAM will hold a press conference on Friday to reveal the consequences of Lee’s decision.
Lee, who is the national No 1, had previously maintained his silence on his future with BAM amid rumours he might leave the team.
If I am a rebel, you won’t see me in this training centre,” he was quoted in a Stadium Astro report yesterday.
“Any announcement (on my future) will be made by BAM. My job is just to train, perform, produce good results and make my country proud. I have no comment on the rumours.”
Zii Jia is currently ranked No 7 in the world by the Badminton World Federation (BWF).
The 23-year-old Kedahan became only the third Malaysian men’s singles shuttler to win the All England title this century when he defeated Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen in the final in March last year. It marked his first major title.
