PETALING JAYA: A dinner organised by Muda turned ugly when about 30 individuals started throwing plastic bottles and firecrackers towards the crowd at the Dewan Yong Shen in Muar today.
This is the second such incident in Muar involving rowdy groups attacking a Muda event. On Oct 17, a group of Mat Rempit motorcyclists heckled the participants by shouting and revving their machines.
Muda secretary-general Amir Hariri Abd Hadi said the incident happened at about 9.30pm when the dinner was in progress.
“About 30 people started provoking the participants by throwing lighted firecrackers and plastic bottles at them,” he told FMT.
He said a few people including Sabah Muda chief Amos Thien were hurt on their legs after being hit by firecrackers.
“The car belonging to Muda central executive committee member Lim Wei Jiet was also damaged. The rowdy group left after a commotion that lasted for about 15 minutes,” he said, adding that a police report will be lodged.
He said the dinner continued without any incident after that.
Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said the situation was brought under control by the police personnel present.
“Why are they provoking us when we were merely having a dinner function? When Muda members asked them where they were from, they started hurling bottles and firecrackers and damaged a car.
“I wish to thank the police personnel for their help in bringing order. I strongly reject the politics of provocation and gangsterism. If you are not happy with us, meet us in the political arena,” he said on his Facebook page.
Also attending the function were former Cabinet ministers Hannah Yeoh and Yeo Bee Yin of DAP.
