PETALING JAYA: Independent candidate Kuan Chee Heng says he has been consistent in helping the people, and not just “once every five years”.
Kuan, better known as Uncle Kentang, is contesting the Puchong parliamentary seat in the general election (GE15).
He said, in jest, that he was not like other candidates who only appear once every five years when a general election comes around, Utusan Malaysia reported.
“Most politicians put their party first before the people. But I don’t just make an appearance once every five years.
“Instead, I have been helping the people every day,” he was quoted as saying.
When asked how confident he was in facing off against the other candidates in Puchong, Kuan said he would leave it up to the voters to choose the candidate they wanted.
Kuan, 59, said he wants to make the plight of single mothers and senior citizens the focal point of his manifesto for GE15.
“Many single mothers are left with nothing after their divorce. This is made worse by the struggles they face trying to get their former husbands to pay due alimony.
“Also, this is an issue that affects all single mothers, whether they are Muslims or not,” he said.
Kuan added that regardless of the outcome of the vote in Puchong, he would get a team of lawyers to assist single mothers, as they do not have the means to pay legal fees and the other costs involved.
He also said it was time for a national plan to be formulated for senior citizens as the country moves towards becoming an “ageing society” by 2030.
“By right these initiatives should fall under the purview of the social welfare department. However, there are still unresolved gaps.
“That is why we must ensure the needs of senior citizens are heard in Parliament,” he was quoted as saying by Utusan.
This will not be his first electoral outing, having contested in the Semenyih by-election in March 2019, as an independent candidate. However, Kuan lost having garnered a meagre 725 votes. The seat was won by the candidate from Barisan Nasional (BN)
Kuan will face Yeo Bee Yin of Pakatan Harapan, Syed Ibrahim Kader (BN), and Chew Jyh Gang (Perikatan Nasional) in the contest for the Puchong seat in GE15.
