Bersih chief laments EC’s silence during and after GE15

Thomas Fann says the Election Commission should have rebutted misinformation about the election process.

Bersih chairman Thomas Fann said the Election Commission had been more quiet compared to previous general elections.
PETALING JAYA:
Electoral reform group Bersih has lamented the Election Commission’s apparent silence throughout and after the 15th general election (GE15), describing the EC as being more quiet compared to previous polls.

Bersih chairman Thomas Fann recounted that one of the group’s main challenges during GE15 was the constant circulation of false information about the election process.

Fann told FMT that there were also various allegations of biasness on the EC’s part as well as “downright dirty tricks” in the election.

“As we are familiar with the rules and processes, we came out with clarifications and rebuttals against some malicious fake news. This should have been the EC’s job, but they were mostly muted and only made official announcements at different stages of the election.

“We were concerned that public confidence in the election was being slowly eroded and the election result would be rejected by the losing parties even though there is little evidence of massive fraud or wrongdoings.

“This would create a very unstable post-election scenario for the country,” said Fann.

He also noted that the EC had been silent on alleged election offences committed by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang and Terengganu Barisan Nasional chief Ahmad Said.

“Though they can’t initiate an investigation or charge them under current laws, they could state clearly which law has been violated,” he said, adding that only the cops could probe and punish the duo over the alleged offence.

“Any person who personally witnessed the offence can and should lodge a police report. The police can initiate investigations on their own, too.”

The pair were spotted wearing shirts with their respective party logos when casting their ballots on Nov 19. Ahmad had a face mask in his chest pocket covering the BN logo, while an aide to Hadi reportedly denied that the emblem on the Marang MP’s shirt was a PAS logo.
