Abang Johari said he will also seek backing from deputy prime minister Fadillah Yusof and the other four ministers from Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) for the proposal.
“I support that because for NGOs, sometimes you have a quota (for senators). Perhaps the medical profession should have a representative in the Dewan Negara.
“However, I’m not the prime minister, I’m just the premier (of Sarawak). Otherwise, I would have given you (MMA) that senator’s post,” he said, according to Borneo Post.
The other four Cabinet members from Sarawak are Alexander Nanta Linggi (works), Aaron Ago Dagang (national unity), Nancy Shukri (women, family and community development) and Tiong King Sing (tourism and culture).
Abang Johari was responding to a call by MMA president Dr Muruga Raj Rajathurai for a senator’s post to be given to the medical body to raise issues and ideas to improve the healthcare system.
Muruga had made the proposal during MMA Sarawak’s 50th anniversary dinner in Kuching last night.
