Landslide death toll rises to 13

PETALING JAYA:
The death toll from this morning’s landslide in Batang Kali has risen to 13.

According to health minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa, the victims include a boy, a man and six women.

Hulu Selangor police chief Suffian Abdullah said another 25 people remain trapped.

Search and rescue operations are ongoing involving 394 personnel from 15 agencies.

The landslide had occurred at several camping sites near Genting Highlands in the early hours of the morning. The campsites include River Hilltop, Farmview, and River Side.

Many of the campers had been there since Wednesday.

Authorities said 79 people were believed to have been camping at the sites.

Selangor fire and rescue chief Norazam Khamis said they were alerted to the incident at 2.24am and arrived at the site half an hour later.

Firemen from the Kuala Kubu Bharu, Rawang, Genting Highlands, Sentosa, Ampang, Pandan, Kota Anggerik, Kajang and Andalas stations have been deployed to assist in the rescue operations.

Personnel from the fire and rescue department’s elite Special Tactical Operation and Rescue Team of Malaysia (STORM) and K9 units are also on site.
