KUALA LUMPUR: Police have confiscated mobile phones belonging to aides to economic affairs minister Rafizi Ramli and Bentong MP Young Syefura Othman.
Farhan Iqbal, Rafizi’s press secretary, said the confiscation was unnecessary as the police had all the documents they needed.
“With that said, I guess they are just doing their job,” he told reporters outside the Sentul police headquarters here.
Earlier, Young’s aide, Noor Suhana Ishak, said she had cooperated with the police and surrendered every document requested by them.
“I don’t understand why they still have to take my phone. The police have all the intelligence and resources, so confiscating my phone is unnecessary,” she said.
Suhana and Farhan had been summoned by the police over a tweet linking Umno Youth to a commotion at a ceramah by Muda.
The group of 30 had disrupted the ceramah and allegedly revved their motorcycles and called Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, the Muar MP, a liar.
In videos of the incident posted on social media, police were seen blocking the group from approaching further.
Suhana said she was shocked that an investigation paper into the matter had only just been opened by police as the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) had initiated its own probe on Oct 27.
“I don’t know why it has taken the police so long to investigate.”
She also asked why the police were probing her for tweeting about the commotion rather than those behind it.
Suhana and Farhan urged the police to investigate those who had started the commotion at the Muda ceramah, saying this was a bigger issue than the Twitter post.
