PETALING JAYA: Former Umno Supreme Council member Zahidi Zainul Abidin, who is poised to join PKR, said he chose to align himself with Pakatan Harapan as his former party and the coalition were now part of the unity government.
Zahidi said joining PH meant that he could still meet up with his friends from Umno.
He said if he opted to join Perikatan Nasional, Umno members who met up with him risked getting sacked.
“And it is even riskier now that they have a president that likes to fire people,” he said in an interview, referring to Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
“So I need to ensure my friends are safe too. I need to pick a suitable platform that will not be problematic.”
Zahidi said by becoming part of PH, his friends from Umno won’t be sacked for fraternising with him because Zahid had formed an alliance with PKR president and PH chairman Anwar Ibrahim.
“So there won’t be problems.”
He also said he wanted to join PH to show his support for the prime minister.
On Monday, Zahidi said he would be submitting his PKR membership form on Feb 4. He also claimed that several national-level Umno leaders would be doing so, too.
Zahidi was sacked by Umno in November after standing as an independent candidate in the 15th general election (GE15), having been dropped by the party.
However he failed to defend his Padang Besar seat, getting only 1,939 votes and losing his deposit, in a five-cornered fight that was won by PN’s Rushdan Rusmi.
