PETALING JAYA: Former Johor menteri besar Hasni Mohammad will be gunning for a vice-president’s post in the upcoming Umno elections.
Hasni, who was the Johor Umno chief from 2018 till January this year, submitted his candidacy papers at the party’s headquarters at World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur earlier today.
“I have submitted the nomination form for the Umno vice-president’s post,” Hasni said in a statement.
His announcement comes hours after Titiwangsa MP Johari Ghani as well as Supreme Council members Reezal Merican Naina Merican and Shamsul Anuar Nasarah announced their candidacy for the post.
They will be contesting against incumbents Khaled Nordin and Mahdzir Khalid.
There are three vice-president’s posts up for grabs. The other incumbent, Ismail Sabri Yaakob, has yet to announce if he will be defending his position.
Speculation is rife that Pengerang MP Azalina Othman Said and Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki were also eyeing the vice-presidency.
Nominations for the Umno elections started on Feb 13 and will continue until Sunday.
The elections for Wanita, Youth and Puteri leadership posts will be held on March 11. Division officials, vice-presidents and members of the Supreme Council will be elected on March 18.
