The senior lawyer said his confidence was not limited to this particular case but also extends to the SRC International corruption case, where an application for leave to review is presently pending in the Federal Court.
“We fought so hard in the review because I am confident if a new (panel of the) Federal Court rehears the matter, we would be able to demonstrate that he (Najib) is innocent,” Shafee told reporters at the Kuala Lumpur High Court Complex here.
Shafee said today’s outcome was the first time Najib had secured a favourable decision in the many criminal cases brought against him.
“And it is a 100% win,” he said, adding that trial judge Zaini Mazlan made a very significant finding that there was “no element of corruption or gratification”.
“I am hoping the Attorney-General’s Chambers will not appeal this (decision) because the findings of the judge are completely supportable,” he said.
According to Shafee, the acquittal has reignited Najib’s fighting spirit.
“My client asked me to tell you that he is grateful to Allah for this decision today because it really uplifts his spirit and desire to fight his cases,” he told reporters.
Earlier today, the High Court freed Najib from a charge of abuse of power in relation to amendments made to the 1MDB audit report prior to its tabling before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC).
Co-accused Arul Kanda was also acquitted of a charge of abetting Najib in the commission of the offence.
