BATU PAHAT: A trader has decided to indulge in his favourite hobby of fishing despite the massive floods here, but it is all for a good cause.
Noor Omar, 53, from Parit Yaani, said since 7am today he and his two friends had been casting their nets in Sungai Terusan along Jalan Yong Peng-Muar, and their catch was given to a flood relief centre (PPS) nearby.
“I regularly go fishing in rivers and give the catch to friends. But during this monsoon season, when there is plenty of fish, I donate the catch to flood victims at a nearby PPS.
“The fish I have caught so far include patin, keli, sepat siam and sepat ronggeng, all weighing almost 10kg.
“It will be handed over to the Dewan Orang Ramai Parit Yaani evacuation centre,” he said when met while fishing in Sungai Terusan.
According to Noor, the floods in Parit Yaani were the worst in 17 years.
As of noon today, the state disaster management committee said Batu Pahat was the worst hit, with 15,915 people from 4,616 families evacuated to 62 centres.
Checks by Bernama showed that the route from Seri Medan here to Yong Peng had been flooded at several spots, with certain sections only passable to heavy vehicles.
