
PETALING JAYA: The race for the three Umno vice-president posts for the 2023-2026 term is still ongoing, with Pahang menteri besar Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail having a clear lead.
The latest unofficial results from Umno Online showed that as at 9.30am Wan Rosdy has 116 votes.
Johor Umno chief Khaled Nordin is in second place with 104 votes while Titiwangsa MP Johari Ghani has 96. Pengerang MP Azalina Othman Said follows closely behind with 63 votes.
Khaled was one of two vice-presidents who had sought re-election. The other, Mahdzir Khalid, had secured only 31 votes as at 9.30am.
Former prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob had decided not to defend his post as a sign of protest against the party’s motion not to allow its two top posts to be contested.
Other candidates vying for the vice-presidency are former Kepala Batas MP Reezal Merican Naina Merican, Simpang Renggam MP Hasni Mohammad, as well as Iskandar Puteri division member Yusof Musa.
In the contest for the 25 seats on the Supreme Council, two ministers and three deputy ministers are among the front-runners.
They are international trade and industry minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz, foreign minister Zambry Abd Kadir, deputy home minister Shamsul Anuar Nasarah, deputy finance minister Ahmad Maslan, and deputy works minister Abdul Rahman Mohamad.
Shamsul was leading the race with 134 votes, closely followed by Zambry with 131.
Also in the top 25 are Sabah Umno chief Bung Moktar Radin, Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi, former Terengganu menteri besar Ahmad Said, former Baling MP Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim, former Machang MP Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub, former Kota Belud MP Abdul Rahman Dahlan, and Lokman Noor Adam.
A total of 189 divisions are entitled to cast their ballots for the party elections.
