PETALING JAYA: Monopolies controlled by companies under the ministry of domestic trade and cost of living will be identified soon according to the minister, Salahuddin Ayub.
He did not give details about what the companies sold or provided. Salahuddin said his ministry would call for others in the industry, or parties interested to be suppliers, to help liberalise the sector.
“This is as per government policy now where we open this up to those interested (to provide products and services),” he was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian.
The ministry’s enforcement chief Azman Adam said the monopoly claim raised by the minister will be looked into as “it involved a certain company”.
He said “there are plenty of players in the egg and chicken industry”, without elaborating.
The Anwar Ibrahim government has recently vowed to embark on a review of all monopolies to ensure that the public enjoys fair and better service. This week, the government ended the Puspakom monopoly on vehicle inspections.
