KUALA LUMPUR: A couple has claimed trial before the sessions court on a charge of exploiting an Indonesian domestic worker.
Lum Kah Wai and his wife, Loke Chee Hui, pleaded not guilty to the charge this morning.
They were charged under Section 12 of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007 for exploiting the victim with the use of force.
If found guilty, they face a jail term of up to 15 years and a fine.
Judge Azura Alwi granted bail of RM10,000 each in one surety and fixed June 6 for the next mention.
Lum and Loke were ordered to surrender their passports to the court pending the disposal of their case.
Wife accused of using hot water, iron on maid
Later, at the magistrates’ court, Loke was slapped with a charge under Section 324 of the Penal Code of assaulting the maid with an iron and hot water.
She was said to have committed the offence between March 3, 2022 and April 23 this year.
If found guilty, she faces a jail sentence up to 10 years and a fine.
Loke, who maintained her “not guilty” plea before magistrate Atiqah Mohamed, was allowed bail of RM6,000 in one surety. Atiqah also fixed June 6 for the next mention.
Loke and Lum were represented by lawyer Varghese Onny, while deputy public prosecutors Wan Ahmad Hijrah Wan Abdullah and Nadia Elena Jamaluddin Akbal appeared for the prosecution.
