PETALING JAYA: Transport minister Loke Siew Fook has allayed concerns that allowing the driving licence to be renewed for up to 10 years could lead to challenges in suspending reckless motorists.
Loke said the road transport department (JPJ) had its own mechanism and system to track traffic offenders and take action, including suspending or revoking a licence, Kosmo reported.
“JPJ has a digital system. When people renew their driving licence for 10 years, it does not mean they will escape our system. We have our own ways to handle enforcement,” he was quoted as saying by the Malay daily.
Previously, a driving licence could only be renewed for one to five years. Under the new policy, anyone who renews their driving licence for 10 years will enjoy a 10% discount on the renewal fee.
Loke, who paid a visit to the Seremban JPJ office today, took the opportunity to renew his licence for 10 years.
“They only have to pay RM270 instead of RM300. This new policy is aimed at making life easier for the people.
“I received a lot of requests from members of the public online for a longer validity period for the driving licence,” he said.
