MELAKA: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has called for the education ministry to set up a panel to look into ways to tackle waning interest in subjects related to science and technology among schoolchildren.
He said although the world is moving towards green technology, especially in the automotive field, children are showing less interest in such subjects, especially among the poor and urban poor.
“I have asked the education minister to set up a special task force to stimulate children’s interest and enthusiasm not only for learning the usual subjects but also in exploring new disciplines in science and technology.
“A study has found that their interest (in such subjects), especially in remote and rural areas as well as the urban poor, has deteriorated,” he said when launching the 2023 National Teachers’ Day celebration here today.
The event, held at Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC) in Ayer Keroh, was also attended by Melaka chief minister Ab Rauf Yusoh, education minister Fadhlina Sidek, her deputy Lim Hui Ying, as well as thousands of teachers from across the country.
At the event, Nuinda Alias was named recipient of the “Tokoh Guru Kebangsaan 2023” award while Mazlan Mohamad received the “Tokoh Kepimpinan Pendidikan Kebangsaan 2023” award.
