KUALA LUMPUR: Police have handed part of the investigation papers on Sanusi Nor, following the Kedah menteri besar’s claim that Penang belongs to Kedah, to the attorney-general, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim confirmed.
“Some of the documents have been passed to the AG.
“Sanusi was irresponsible in making the claim and police have initiated an investigation and are prepared to take appropriate action to prevent such statements from being repeated,” Anwar told the Dewan Rakyat this morning.
Anwar said this in response to Lim Guan Eng (PH-Bagan) who wanted to know what action had been taken following Sanusi’s claim.
Anwar said police were investigating Sanusi for causing public mischief and abuse of network facilities. This came after DAP MP RSN Rayer lodged a police report on June 1.
“The prosecution has full powers to check if there are offending elements under the Sedition Act 1948 or other laws,” he said.
Anwar said if people continued to question the sovereignty of states based on old agreements, it would only open a can of worms.
He added that if the Thai government decided to revisit its agreements with Kedah and Perlis, it would spell trouble.
“We should not bring back cases that would hit back at us.”
Anwar said while the history between Penang and Kedah was open for academics to discuss at seminars, people should not make spurious claims based on the interpretation of a few historians.
“It appears that just for the state elections, some are willing to sacrifice the principles of the Federal Constitution to cause unrest.”
Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden (PN-Alor Setar) then came to Sanusi’s defence saying the menteri besar was not the first to raise the issue.
He said a former state executive councillor had also raised the matter in 2017.
He said Umno’s Rawi Hamid had said that “Kedah would do its best to take back Penang”, and asked if the government would take similar action.
Anwar said if this was indeed true, Rawi should have been reported to the police.
“It does not matter which party the person is from. If there are elements of sedition, it should be reported to the police. We will take action against all – Umno, PAS or even PKR.”
