
PETALING JAYA: Shaik Abdul Rasheed Abdul Ghaffour will take over as the governor of Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) from July 1, BNM has announced.
BNM said Abdul Rasheed, who is currently a deputy governor, will serve as the central bank’s governor for five years until June 30, 2028.
“He will assume the position of governor from Nor Shamsiah Yunus, who completes her five-year term on June 30,” it said in a statement.
Abdul Rasheed said he was honoured by the appointment and looked forward to continuing and building on Nor Shamsiah’s work.
“I will endeavour to carry out the duties of governor to the best of my ability,” he said.
Abdul Rasheed joined BNM in 1988 and rose to the position of deputy governor in 2016. He sits on the bank’s Monetary Policy Committee and Financial Stability Committee
He had a key role in the development and successful implementation of the Financial Sector Masterplan (2001-2010) and formulation of the Financial Sector Blueprint (2011-2020).
Between 2012 and 2014, he was the alternate executive director for Malaysia on the International Monetary Fund’s executive board.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Universiti Malaya and a master’s degree in business administration from the Said Business School at Oxford University.
