KUALA LUMPUR: An Umno leader has called for party vice-president Johari Ghani to be given an important position in the government.
Federal Territories Umno information chief Gulam Muszaffar Gulam Mustakim said Johari should hold an important role in the government as he was the sole Umno MP in the Federal Territories.
He said Johari, who is Titiwangsa MP, would be able to voice the concerns of residents in the Federal Territories and ensure that policy measures to improve the welfare of the people were not neglected by the government.
“We have an Umno vice-president in the Federal Territories, a leader who I consider the last man standing in the Klang Valley. He is Johari Ghani,” he said at the Umno general assembly held at the World Trade Centre here.
There had previously been calls for Johari to be appointed second finance minister to assist Anwar Ibrahim. Anwar is currently prime minister and finance minister. There are also two deputy finance ministers – Umno’s Ahmad Maslan and Steven Sim from DAP.
Muszaffar also claimed that Federal Territories Umno had been neglected with its representatives not being roped in for policy discussions.
He reiterated a call for the federal territories ministry to be restored after it was restructured as a department under the Prime Minister’s Department under the unity government.
The federal territories comprise Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan.
