PETALING JAYA: Lokimala, the country’s oldest elephant, has died at the age of 86 at the National Elephant Conservation Centre in Kuala Gandah, Pahang.
The wildlife and parks department (Perhilitan) said the female elephant was brought to Malaysia from India along with three others in 1974 when she was already 37 years old.
Perhilitan credited the animal, who died yesterday morning, with helping over 150 relocated wild elephants to settle in their new habitats.
At the time of her death, Lokimala was nearly the same age as the oldest elephant ever recorded, Lin Wang, who died this year in Taipei.
